Abstract
The objective of this study is to investigate the characteristics, relationships, and predictive power of the strategic processess, human capital and administrative styles of the independent hotel entrepreneurs in the most successful tourist districts of Thailand. The sample is composed of independent hotel entrepreneurs who are willing to cooperate with the project. The research conduct an opportunity sampling by using Yamane’s statistic method. The project covers 6 regions and 13 provinces which are considered the most successful tourist areas by our criteria such as they must be in business for at least 3 years. The number of hotels being studied are 541 cases in total. Among them, 378 cases are run by the entrepreneurs themselves and th rest of the 167 cases are run by the CEOs who are hired to run the business. The entrepreneurs invest, control and set up the policies them let the CEOs run the business. The research project collects data during the period from October 2007 to September 2008 which was prior to the global recession crisis that started in the USA. And expanded world wide. The project was also conducted prior to the political protest in Thailand which culminated in the closing of the Suwannaphoom airport in Thailand. The instruments being used in this study are individual structured interviews and questionnaires which compose of entrepreneurs’ self-report and interviewers’ evaluations. The statistical analysis tools being used are frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson’s Coefficient of Correlation and Stepwise multiple regression analysis. The findings are as follows:
Most entreprenuers employ the strategy of critical point planning and have high level of success. They are mostly self-employed and most of them hold an undergraduated degree. They have medium level of professional skill and administrative experiences. The entrepreneurs who run the business by themselves are likely to employ critical point planning as a strategy while most CEOs use complete prior planning. As for other strategies, the self-employed entrepreneurs and the CEOs do not differ in the employment of them as well as do not differ in-terms of success which means they have been all successful in conducting businesses. They also have the same level of education since they all have a bachelor’s degree. However, there are some differences which are the CEOs have more administrative experiences and higher professional skills. Moreover, administrative styles mark some different results in Parts and Provinces conditions.
The results of the relationship are the success of the business in positively correlated with the strategy of complete prior planning and is negatively correlated with the reactive strategy. These factors can predict the variance of success in business administration. As for the two different administrative styles, i.e., the self employed and employment of CEOs they both have been successful. However, among these successful administrators, the CEOs tend to employ complete prior planning strategy as well as having higher professional skills and more administrative experiences. As for the critical point planning strategy the CEOs use this strategy less frequently than the self-employed entrepreneurs. As for the moderately successful businesses, the CEOs tend to employ the strategy of completer prior planning and have higher professional skills than the self-employed entrepreneurs. In addition, the CEOs have less frequently used reactive strategy. It has been discovered that the details and the results of the relationships have specific characteristics because they are conditioned by the context of each tourist area.
